Obituary for Hicklin Albert Harrel Jr.

Hicklin Albert Harrel, Jr., 94, died on Monday, December 24, 2018 in Fort Worth, Texas. He was born on November 11, 1924, in Houston, Texas, the son of Hicklin Albert Harrel, Sr. and Nona Crain Harrel. He was married to Winona Judkins Harrel for over 69 years, with whom he had three children. Mr. Harrel was a life-long member of the church of Christ. He served as a deacon in a Houston, Texas, congregation, and also as an elder in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He was a World War II veteran who went to France in 1944 as a Private First Class in the 42nd Infantry “Rainbow” Division, Army of the United States. During combat in northern France he received a battlefield promotion to Second Lieutenant, Infantry. As the Rainbow Division proceeded through southern Germany, he participated in several historic engagements, including the liberation of the infamous Dachau concentration camp. In addition to his battlefield commission, he also earned the Combat Infantryman Badge and a Bronze Star Medal. Mr. Harrel was a member of the Stephen Holston Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). He was also the author of two books – The Harrel Family (a family history/genealogy book) and WWII: My War (his World War II memoirs). In addition, he was a holder of an amateur radio operator Extra Class license (call signs KR4EP in Oak Ridge and earlier as W5RKF in Houston). Mr. Harrel earned two degrees from the University of Houston, a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration in Industrial Management. He was a Certified Public Accountant in Tennessee. He taught mathematics of finance at the University of Houston and advanced accounting for University of Tennessee extension courses in Oak Ridge. At the time of his retirement in 1991 he was an Audit Director for the Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Energy. He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sister, Jo Ann, who died in 1942 at four years of age. He is survived by his loving wife Winona, along with three children: Janet (Mark) Tallent, Craig (Elizabeth Anne) Harrel, and Lee Alison (Kenneth) Williams – as well as two granddaughters, Erin Elizabeth Tallent, and Caitlin (Keegan) Hines, one great-granddaughter, Sally Claire Hines, and in-laws Billy Ray Judkins, Phyllis Holleman, and Brenda (Douglas) Adams. Funeral services will be held at Heritage Church of Christ in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at Oak Ridge Memorial Park in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 10:00 a.m.
