Obituary for Mary Combs Anthony

Mary Anthony, 60, went home to be with the Lord on May 31, 2018. She was born on January 20, 1958, in Dalton GA, to Lincoln Edward Combs and Mary Pendley Combs, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her loving little sister, Janice Combs. She was blessed to spend over 41 years married to her beloved and devoted husband, Gary Anthony. They enjoyed spending their time together traveling and loved beautiful days on the motorcycle. Their commitment and unconditional love to each other was a true inspiration to all who knew them. Mary dedicated herself to being a supermom - shuttling her children to all their numerous sporting events, helping with homework, leading Girl Scout troops, giving driving lessons, and creating an all over wonderful and fun life full of memories. More than anything, she loved spending time with her family. She especially loved traveling regardless of the destination. The beach and any place with lots of history were, by far, her favorites. Her grandchildren were one of her greatest joys. She continually shared her love of history, politics, travel, and “big” words with them. She was also a successful actress and producer in all the family skits. Spending time with her siblings just got better with time and they made a point to do it often. She volunteered for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate Association) for many years where she was able to care for countless other families. She retired from ORAU where she worked in a number of capacities, including a National Science Foundation program, as a specialist to recruit and coordinate the temporary pool, and as a human resources ORACLE and data reporting specialist. She was known for her attention to detail, competence, and compassion. She was humbled by the spirit and accommodations of her co-workers as her lung health declined and appreciated their celebration of her lung transplant. After receiving a rare diagnosis of IPF (Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis) she was blessed to receive a lifesaving lung transplant at Cleveland Clinic. She was an enthusiastic advocate for Donate Life and registry awareness. In 2016 she competed in the Transplant Games of America with Team Tennessee Donor Services. She thought of and prayed for her donor’s family every day after her transplant. Words will never be able to express how grateful and thankful we are to her donor and her family for this priceless gift that afforded her almost 4 more years of creating memories. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 41 years, Gary Anthony; her beloved children Christi Oliver of Knoxville TN and Wesley (Casey) Anthony of Oak Ridge TN; grandchildren Jacob Anthony, Chloe Mallett, Emma Oliver, Zach Williamson, Lucas Anthony, Hannah Oliver, Logan Anthony, and Brianna Williamson; siblings Alice Carole (Terrell) Holtzclaw of Dalton GA, Henry (Caroline) Combs of Knoxville TN, Jo Anne (Neal) Lavender of Knoxville TN, Marie (Joe) Westfall of Oak Ridge TN, Marti (Leo) Parrish of Statesboro GA, Curtis (Bonnie Ballard) Combs of Guntersville AL, John (Susan Kokora) Combs of Asheville NC. Also survived by brothers and sisters in-laws Billy Anthony of Oak Ridge TN, Bonnie Harvey of Oliver Springs TN, Darlene (Jim) Pierce of Milton FL, Johnny (Linda) Anthony of Clinton, TN, Pat (Doug) Scruggs of Oak Ridge TN; cherished aunts, Rose Marie Westmoreland, Janet Suddeth, and Eileen Mullinax; many special nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she adored. A special thank you to her dedicated medical team at Cleveland Clinic and Dr. Diane Fabricius in Oak Ridge who showed her so much compassion and gave her the best of care. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday June 5, 2018 with the Receiving of Friends from 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm and the Service to immediately follow at
