Obituary for Webster Van Winkle Jr.

Webster Van Winkle, Jr., 79, died on March 29, in Oak Ridge, TN. He grew up in Summit, NJ, graduated from Oberlin College and earned his PhD in zoology from Rutgers University. He taught biology at William and Mary and then did post-graduate work in biomathematics and biostatistics at North Carolina State University before taking a position in the Environmental Sciences Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he worked until his retirement in 1998. He lived in Boise, ID, for a number of years, returning to Oak Ridge in 2013 as his health began to decline. Webb was active in the Oak Ridge community, most notably as a co-founder of both youth soccer, now AYSO, and the Oak Ridge Girls Club, now Girls Inc. He was a lifelong fitness buff and also loved singing in various choirs over the years. Above all, Webb was a loving and involved family man, father, and grandfather. He is predeceased by his parents, Elise and Webster Van Winkle, Sr. He is survived by his daughter Lynda Van Winkle (Mark Sture), Anchorage, AK; sons Andrew Van Winkle (Michelle), Austin, Texas; and Douglas Van Winkle, Oak Ridge, TN; stepdaughter Erin Rudder, Spokane, WA; granddaughter Tully Sandbom, Anchorage AK; grandsons, Cooper Sandbom, Anchorage, AK; and Carson Van Winkle and Payton Van Winkle, Austin, TX. He is also survived by his first wife, Judy Van Winkle, Oak Ridge; his second wife Maureen Cunningham, Spokane, WA; brothers, Davis Van Winkle (Louise), Raymond, ME; Keith Van Winkle, Norwich, VT; sister, Barbara Van Winkle (Joan Lovelace), Columbia, MD.; sister-in-law Kit Van Winkle, Boulder, CO; and many nieces and nephews. The family is especially thankful for the compassionate care provided to Webb by the staff of the Courtyards Senior Care Center in Oak Ridge and Joan Perona. A memorial service will be held at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike, on Thursday, April 5, at 6:30pm, followed by a reception and receiving of friends. A scattering of the ashes is planned at the family property in Maine. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate those wishing to honor Webb by donating in his memory to the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church www.oruuc.org/online-giving or a charity of your choice. An online guest book can be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com.
