Obituary for Wanda Parrett Craven

Wanda Parrett Craven went to her heavenly home Sunday, March 25, 2018. She was born in Bond, KY in 1932, the oldest of 7 children, and moved to Oak Ridge, TN in 1944 with her family. She graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1951, after which she married her high school sweetheart, C.W. (Pete) Craven, in 1952. She has 2 daughters, Vicky Craven Scruggs (Jerry) of Oak Ridge, and Cheryl Craven Graham (Richard) of Signal Mountain. Wanda was preceded in death by a son, Michael Anthony Craven, her parents, Lester and Hazel Parrett, and sisters Joyce Jannen, AnnaBella Lane and Angela Collins. She is survived by her husband, Pete, her 2 daughters, as well as 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Also, brothers Phillip Parrett (Bonnye) of Oak Ridge, Jerry Parrett (Frances) of Claxton, and sister Kathy Moore (Dan Tuxbury) of Oak Ridge, many nieces and nephews and very special friends, Phyllis Woodard, Cassie Shipley and Pat Coffey. After years of volunteer work for her girls’ school and her church, in 1976 Wanda went to work at Polaris Travel, Inc. in Oak Ridge. She bought the agency in 1978 and continued selling and leading groups all over the world and managing the agency until her retirement in 2000. Her love of travel and friendly personality allowed her to become involved in many worthy organizations in the United States and abroad. She was the first female president of Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary, Co-Chair of Roane State fund drive to build the Oak Ridge campus; founding member of Crown Monarch (a Girl’s Club support group), member of steering committee for annual Oak Ridge Prayer Breakfast; one of the founders and past Board member of Oak Ridge Convention and Visitor’s Bureau; member of Board of Directors of Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce (headed drive for Christmas lights); 1990 Retailer of the Year, co-developer of Leadership Oak Ridge; honorary member of Governor’s staff and State Rep staff; partner-in-education with Woodland Elementary School; President of Oak Ridge Sister City organization for Obninsk, Russia and Naka Machi, Japan, served on the Foundation Board of Methodist Medical Center, and served on the Roane State board. Wanda led an effort to obtain pediatric supplies for shipment to orphanages in Romania and funded a trip for a doctor and a nurse to assist them. She then raised money for the construction of an elementary school in Cañuelas, Argentina in 1994, while providing them books, computers and software. She solicited donations for children’s books to be sent to China for helping children and adults learn the English language. She made many friends in Russia and helped coordinate several business openings in Obninsk, as well as strengthen relations between the two cities. Wanda assisted in opening a travel agency in Obninsk and trained some of their agents while they visited Oak Ridge. One of Wanda’s favorite trips was to Hong Kong to shop with her close friends, Phyllis Woodard, Pat Coffey, Pat Lakers, Pat Postma, and Kay Hamrick, and many other escapades with dear friends. She and Pete also enjoyed traveling with their grandchildren to various locations around the world. Wanda has been a member of Central Baptist Church since 1947 (originally Highland View Baptist). The Parrett family were one of the founding families of the church. She missed her church family this past year and so appreciated the cards of encouragement and love. She loved the Lord and served Him diligently. The family would like to express their appreciation to Wanda’s loving caregivers, Angela Miller, Laurie Hostetler, and Michael Dossett. A special thank you to Dr. Ann Carter, Dr. Victor McLaughlin and Dr. Gary Wells as well as the staff of Amedisys Hospice and Fresenius Dialysis Center, Oak Ridge. We also wish to thank Trish Pannell for her loving care and friendship to mom. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 from 4 – 6pm at Central Baptist Church. Wanda’s service will follow at 6pm with Pastor Glenn Ellis officiating. Entombment in Oak Ridge Memorial Park will be private. In lieu of flowers, Wanda requested donations be made to Central Baptist Church television ministry, 130 Providence Road, Oak Ridge, 37830, or City of Oak Ridge Animal Shelter, 395 Belgrade Rd, Oak Ridge, 37830. Arrangements by Weatherford Mortuary. An online guest book can be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com.
