Obituary for George Holdsworth

George Holdsworth

The dearly loved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on February 15. He is survived by his wife of many years, Rosemary; his brother John; his five children Charlotte, Peter, Alice, Lawrence, and Elizabeth; and his six grandchildren Sam, Ben, Phoebe, Elijah, Annie, and Owen.

He was born on August 10, 1944 in Shipley, England. He was proud of his 50 years of work in biochemical and toxicological research. He received his doctorate from the University of Birmingham and then went on to complete his post-doctoral work at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. He emigrated from England with his family to continue his research at the University of Cincinnati in 1981. The Holdsworth family settled in Oak Ridge in 1983. He finished his distinguished career at ORAU.

A keen musician, he played the piano and cello. He was the choir director of St Nektarios Orthodox Church. He had an especial love of opera and attended the Knoxville Opera. His interest in the arts expanded beyond music; he dabbled in writing children’s stories.

He was an avid runner and member of the Oak Ridge and Knoxville track clubs where he won the 1990 master’s half marathon. He donated his labor to the Ecumenical Storehouse and Habitat for Humanity. A soccer fan, he rooted for the Bradford City Bantams and Arsenal. He was a dog enthusiast and enjoyed taking walks along the North Ridge Trail.

Services were held at St Nektarios Orthodox Church on February 17, 2018. In lieu of flowers, remembrance should be sent to the Lymphoma Society. He will be dearly missed. An online guest book may be signed at
