Obituary for Thelma W. Heacker-Brown

Former Oliver Springs High School and Petros-Joyner Elementary School teacher, Thelma W. Heacker-Brown, died early Sunday morning February 4th, 2018, peacefully in her sleep with the eldest of her five children by her side. She was 90 years old.

She had been living with Parkinson’s Disease, with related dementia and heart disease for the past several years.

Thelma W. Heacker-Brown was born in Lakeland,FL on November 27, 1927 to Andrew and Stella Hodges Weaks.

A 1949 Carson Newman University graduate, with a B.S. in Education, Thelma taught History, Biology, and Spanish at Oliver Springs High School
from 1950-1970. She continued her education at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, TN, where she earned her Masters Degree in Education in 1980. She ended her teaching career at Petros-Joyner Elementary in Morgan County, TN, where she taught fourth/fifth grades, from 1976 to 1994.

She settled in Oak Ridge, TN with her husband, of 37 years, Howard V Heacker who passed away in 1986. Thelma later married V.L. “Brownie” Brown on March 31st, 1991, until his death on October 20th, 2008.

She was a long time, very active member of Kern United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge. She was dedicated to several ministries in the church, in addition to singing in the Choir. Thelma was also active in the Beta Sigma Phi sorority for many years and an avid supporter of the National Education Association.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Stella Hodges Weaks; her two sisters, Helen W. Snyder and Flora (Peggy) W. Thomas; first husband Howard V. Heacker, second husband, V L Brown and great granddaughter Hailey Michelle Mayorga.

She is survived by her five children, Victor Andrew Heacker, Patricia H. Kitchin, both of Oak Ridge, TN; Paula M. and Wayne J. Legleiter of Katy, Texas; Jonathan E. Heacker of Anderson, S.C.; and Johannah G. Thompson of Memphis, TN. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; Ashley Kinder of Harriman, TN; Joshua and Georgy Kitchin of Knoxville, TN; Dimonico Heacker, Kristen, Esteban, and Christopher Mayorga of Houston, TX; Jonathan and Sarah Heacker, Jessica Heacker all of Knoxville, TN; and Dalton and Rachael Thompson of Nashville, TN. Thelma also leaves behind 4 great-grandchildren, James Kitchin, Cruize Furman, and Layla Kitchin; Issac Kinder; and Travis and Samira Heacker of Houston, Texas. She also leaves behind 1 great-great-grandchild, Orion, along with several nieces and nephews.

The family will have a Celebration of Life service on Thursday, February 8th, 2018, at Kern United Methodist Church, 451 E.Tennessee Ave at 1:00p.m., with Minister Delores Alei, Thelma’s niece of Naarre,FL, officiating. There will be a private burial at Lynnhurst Cemetary in Knoxville, TN after the service.

The family asks that memorials be in the form of contributions to the Parkinsons.org.
