Obituary for Robert Marion Gross Sr.

Robert (Bob) Marion Gross, 79, of Oak Ridge, passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2018. He was born to parents Alvis Gross and Mary Pittman Gross on July 4, 1939 in Clarksburg, TN. Robert graduated from Oak Ridge High School and Tennessee Tech University with a Business Management degree. He was in the U S Army Security Agency stationed at Two Rock Ranch in Petaluma, CA and Chitose Army Base in Chitose, Japan which prepared him for his employment at the facilities in Oak Ridge. He worked for General Electric, Union Carbide- Lockheed Martin-Martin Marietta- Bechtel Jacobs-MOM and Commodore Advanced Sciences as a Senior Environmental Technician. He was a longtime member of Highland View Church of Christ and a previous member of New York Avenue Church of Christ in his formative years. He has many friends in both congregations. He spent the summers of his early years on the farm in Clarksburg, TN riding his pony and enjoying the open fields of the farm. Preceding him in death was his parents and his son, Robert Marion Gross, Jr. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Hazel Frances Kirby Gross; Daughters, Cynthia Carol Robbins (Cindi) and Misty Dawn Robbins; Grandchildren, Georgia Kelly Gross of Indianapolis, IN and Jordan Chase Robbins of Oak Ridge; Sisters, Claire Kay Gross Davis and her husband Jerry, Deborah Ann Gross Barrick and her husband Bill all of Brush Creek. Brothers-in-law, Tom Kirby and wife Vonda of Hendersonville, Ronnie Kirby and wife Barbara, and Sister-in Law, Marie Montgomery all of Cookeville. He has several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. We wish to express our great appreciation to Dr. John Foust, Dr. Joseph Metcalf, Dr. Elliott Navo, Dr. David Seay, & Cold War Patriots for their unending help and care during the long battle with his cancer. Robert enjoyed hunting and fishing in his earlier days, gardening in his later days. His daily meeting with his "Breakfast Club" was one of his great enjoyments since retirement. Thank you so much Bruce and Jim for your unwavering dedication in picking him up and taking him to be a part of the group after he was no longer able to drive. Our greatest thanks to the members of Highland View Church of Christ for the support and many prayers through this long ordeal and to the Body Menders in support and prayers that were given on our behalf. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 3, 2019 from 5 – 7pm at Highland View Church of Christ. A memorial service will follow at 7pm with Curtis McClane officiating.
