Obituary for Ralph Horton Ford

Ralph Horton Ford, best known as “Granddad” passed into the arms of Jesus on

February 28, 2019. Ralph was born in Clinchport, VA on March 15, 1920 to James

Dudley (Dud) Ford and Millie Cansada Stacey Ford. He graduated from Shoemaker High

School in Gate City, VA, in 1938, and Lincoln Memorial University in 1942, and did

graduate work in Metallurgical Engineering. Ralph married Frances Inez Smith on

March 8, 1943 in Birmingham, Alabama. They lived in Oak Ridge for most of their lives,

where he worked as a Chemist and Supervisor at Y-12 in Bldg 9212, for 35 years,

working on the Manhattan Project, rocketship parts, and the safe box to bring rocks

back from the moon.

Ralph was preceded in death by his wife of 75+ years, Frances (“Fank” to him,

“Mumma” to most); his parents; his son, Ralph Ford, Jr.; his sisters, Dorothy (Elmo)

Ford Franklin, Madeline (John) Ford Baldasano, and Jackie (Milo) Ford Ward and his

brother-in-law Jim McCary.

Ralph is survived by his daughters: Barbara Moon of Dacula, Georgia, Millie (& Hugh)

Roberts of Malakoff, Texas, and Jackie Harris of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; and by his

daughter-in-law, Carolyn Ford of Karns, 19 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, and

10 great great grandchildren, his sister-in-law, Annie Cordelia McCary of Shalimar,

Florida; and by his friend and good neighbor, Bob Olszenski.

Favorite memories of “Granddad” are his love of dancing, his love of his wife and

family, his positive attitude, and fun stories of days gone by. Ralph was a longtime

member of First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, where he was saved and baptized in

1944. He enjoyed fellowshipping with friends from the Plant and singing in the Choir. In

lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to In His Hands Children’s

Home, 14530 Cherokee Landing, Malakoff, TX 75148.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 5:00 pm at Robertsville Baptist Church located at 251

Robertsville Road in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on Saturday, March 2, with the service immediately

following at 5:00 pm. The burial will be on Sunday, March 3, at 2:30 pm at Holston View
