Obituary for Paul Craven

In memory of Paul Craven 93, longtime resident of Oak Ridge and retiree from Y-12, passed away June 25, 2019, Tuesday morning, to be with the Lord. Originally born and raised in Wilder, Tennessee, he remained there until enrolling at Web School in Bell Buckle where he graduated. Afterwards he joined the Navy for four years and then moved to Knoxville area to attend U.T. where he got his bachelors in electrical engineering and 2nd degree in Physics. After graduation in 1953 he moved to Oak Ridge in which he was hired on at K-25. While riding the plant bus he met the love of his life Sarah Darnell, whom he sat beside one day which led to a wonderful relationship of 66 years. Paul was all about his family. He had an insatiable willingness to learn which led him to read many books and spend countless hours researching on his computer. He liked keeping up with the new sciences and technology but his main interest was American History especially military history and genealogy was his passion. Paul had an interesting history as well. He grew up in Wilder an old mining town. His parents strongly urged their boys to get a good education. Despite their humble beginnings, Paul and his brothers worked hard to accomplish the dreams of their parents. Although Paul was humble in his accomplishments, he was very proud of how his brothers excelled. His brothers Rufus became a plastic surgeon, Bill a lawyer, J.B. an engineer at N.A.S.A., and Charlie a chemical engineer. Paul also was an avid sports fan of football and basketball, especially U.T., and a spectator of Golf. Paul cared deeply for his country and admired the veterans for their service to which he supported. He also contributed to various historical preservation societies. Although being a private man by nature, he was always willing to engage in friendly conversation as people were drawn to his down to earth manner, witty charm, captivating blue eyes and nice smile.
Paul is survived by his wife Sarah Darnell Craven and two children Cynthia Craven Smith and Wendell Craven (Martine); grandson Brian Bostic (Samantha); granddaughter Natalie Craven; great-grandson Spencer Bostic; sister in-law Jimmie Darnell Griffin (Ted); brother in-law Buzz Gordon (Cyndi); brother-in-law, Allen Henegar; and many nieces and nephews. Receiving of friends will be Tuesday, July 2 from 12: 00 pm– 2:00 pm at Weatherford Mortuary. The service will begin at 2:00 pm with Dr. Charles Lowery, a member of the family officiating and burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided by the Volunteer State War Era Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Gary Sinise Foundation for wounded veterans, PO Box 368, Woodland Hills, CA 91365; the Volunteer State War Era Honor Guard, PO Box 20041, Knoxville, TN 37940 or to a charity of your choice.
