Obituary for Parlee Howell Mitchell

Mother Parlee Mitchell, 98, was born December 31, 1919 in Aberdeen, Mississippi, to George Howell and Virgie Dilworth. She went home to be with the Lord on September 21, 2018, at the Methodist Medical Center, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. She was united in holy matrimony on December 25, 1941 to Clint Mitchell Sr., and God blessed them with twelve children. Mother Mitchell worked at Oak Ridge Downtown Hardware for over 50 years before retiring in 2009.
After relocating to Oak Ridge, she became a member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. C. C. Fuller. Because of her commitment to Christ and her faithfulness to Mt. Zion, the honor of “church mother” was bestowed upon her under the pastorate of the late Elder D. J. Ward. She was a strong pillar of Mt. Zion until her health would no longer allow her to attend Sunday School, morning and evening worship service. She was an honorary member of the C. C. Fuller Circle and she served this community as a member of the Guiding Light Circle. Throughout her life, many people, young and old, sought her for God-given wisdom and guidance. Mother Mitchell was also known in the neighborhood for her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. Along with her love for gardening, she had a keen sense of style that was shown through her love for hats, suits and shoes. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Mitchell; son, Clemmie Mitchell Sr. (Eula surviving spouse); grandsons, Alonzo Slater, Erwin Mitchell Jr.; great-grandsons, Frederick Black and Hobert Mitchell; and great-granddaughter, Brittaney Turner. She is survived by five daughters, Virgie Mitchell, Eloise Mitchell, Charity Holley (Sidney), Ann Patterson (Ralph), and Loretta Mitchell; Step daughter, Yvonne Daniels; five sons, David C. Mitchell (Loretta), Clint Mitchell (Lacy), Erwin Mitchell (Sharvette Washington), Dexter Mitchell (Dorothy Slater), and Joseph Mitchell (Donna Gilliard). She is also survived by three brothers, Charlie Howell, Joe Howell, and Winston Howell; two sisters, Willie M. Howell and Mary Howell; 58 grandchildren, 90 great-grandchildren, 42 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild; as well as several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She also had a brother George Howell, who recently passed away. The service will be held on Saturday September 29, 2018 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 195 Wilberforce Ave., Oak Ridge, TN. The family will receive friends from 10 - 11 a.m. and the funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Hardil Thomas officiating and Rev. D. W. Waters giving the eulogy. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. An online guest book may be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com
