Obituary for Nettie Ruth Smith

Nettie Ruth Smith, 94, of Oak Ridge, TN passed away on Friday, May 3, 2019. Born in Franklin County, GA, she was the daughter of Reppard and Lula Cole. Ruth moved to Oak Ridge in 1953 with her husband Earl and son Tom. She was a familiar face to many, working at Woolworth’s in her earlier years and enjoying her passion for golf with her many friends. Her smile was contagious and her heart was full of compassion. Ruth was a long-time member of Robertsville Baptist Church and was very close to her church family. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and had the greatest love for her family. In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by her husband Earl; brothers Benson Cole and Grady Roberts; and sisters Irene Cole, Mildred Minish and Sarah Swindel. She is survived by her son Tom (Treba) Smith; grandsons Greg (Melissa) Smith and Jeff (Kelly) Smith; great grandchildren Eli Smith and Kathleen Smith; brother Marvin (Jeanette) Cole; sisters Jimmie Nash, Faye Cole, and Ann (Tom) Rogers; brother-in-law Ford Swindel; and many dear nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend thanks to the caring staff at Brookdale Senior Living. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no formal services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Robertsville Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, TN. An online guestbook may be signed at
