Obituary for Leonard Clark Fuller

Leonard Clark Fuller, 88, of Oak Ridge, passed away Friday, April 5, 2019 at the Methodist Medical Center. He is survived by four children, Debbie Lane, Clark Fuller, Joel Loy Shirley and wife Maria and Donna Shirley-Smith and husband Stewart; bookoos of grandkids and several great-grandkids. “Rejoice, rejoice says the Lord. When one amongst you is called home, what a glorious day it is.” Len believed that fully, knowing what eternity would bring him. Heck yeah, we miss him, and surely there will be countless hours and days of grief, but we trust in the assurances of God’s word. First allow me to say, obituaries without cause, only leave everyone hanging, so I will just tell you that Dad experienced a sudden intestinal twisting that led to irreversible tissue damage. No long drawn out illness for this man! I think he would have been pleased to know that he experienced very little discomfort through the event.
The man was amazing far beyond his academic and work history. People that knew him, most likely knew just about all of his personal public accomplishments, so I won’t bore you with the details. The man that many would not know was the father we loved and admired. A man that was thrust into being a single parent of two small children. The man that took on the challenge of blending a family with Helen, and assuming full responsibility for raising her three small children as well. The man that stressed ethics and integrity and lived it out every day. The man that taught us to live modestly and to be content. The man that allowed failure to be a tool for growth. The man that never stopped learning through the very end and never stopped listening to advice from those he trusted. As most of you know, Dad lost his bride of 49 years, just a little over a year ago. He adored Helen more than life itself and the loss made for a very difficult year of grieving. But as life would have it, people and opportunities came his way that really began to show him his Godly purpose in life was to learn to love fully. Loving fully became his mission, which he expounded on every day. In addition to his wife and parents, Earl and Julia Wurmser Fuller, he was preceded in death by son, David Ryan Shirley. Thanks to all of you that crossed his path and showed appreciation and love to the father we knew and loved. God bless you each and every one. Okay, on with the show. As a family, we would like to invite you to a “celebration of life”, if you will. This will be held on Friday, April 12, 2019 from 4 – 6pm at the Oak Ridge Art Center, 201 Badger Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN. An on-line guest book can be signed at
