Obituary for LC Manley, Jr.

LC Manley, Jr, age 90 of Oak Ridge passed away October 31, 2019. He was born February 25, 1929 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
He was preceded in death by father, LC Manley Sr; mother, Leola Manley; and sisters, Ruby Manley Gray and Mary Mahone. He held a BA from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, AL.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bessie; children, Diane Hicks-Walker, Inkster, Ml; Carolyn Manley and Cynthia Manley, Knoxville; Wendell (MaryAnna) Manley, Tampa, FL; Edgar (Kelley) Manley, Hollister, CA; grandchildren, Jason Horice, Buffalo, NY; Erica Horice and Simone Horice, Atlanta, GA; Emily Walker, Inkster, Ml; Dakota, Kyle, Matthew, and Taylor Manley, Hollister, CA; nephews and niece, Anthony (Sylvia) Manley, Knoxville; Steve Gray, Omaha, NE; Greg (Kim) Gray, Eugene, OR; Myra (Rasheed) West, Knoxville; 5 great-grand- children, 2 great-great grand- children, and several other relatives and friends.
He accepted a position at Oak Ridge National Laboratory where he worked, mainly in the Metals and Ceramics Division, for 30 years. He was experienced in operating high temperature furnaces and vacuum systems and designed pieces of equipment to use in experiments. Participated in studies of diffusion phenomena. Contributed to the successful completion of the 100-hour milestone in the Materials Handling Demonstration Module (MHDM) of the AVLIS project.
He was on active duty in the Army from 1950 to 1953 as a radio operator.
He was an active member of Oak Valley Baptist Church. He attended Sunday School regularly, studied the Bible daily, and served as a Trustee.
He was active in the community: member of the Oak Ridge Chapter of the NAACP, Scarboro Neighborhood Improvement Association; Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee; Jefferson Junior High School PTA; Member of Masonic Lodge 354
He enjoyed sports. As a youth he played baseball with members of the Negro League. As an adult he played baseball in an adult league and bowled with the Woodchoppers. He was a member of an Investment Club, attended Wildcat football and basketball games, and coached basketball teams sponsored by Spurgeon Chapel
He made a yearly trip to Myrtle Beach with his golf posse. He played every golf course in the Knoxville-Oak Ridge area; in California and Michigan and others throuqhout the south. Family and friends will remember him as an avid golfer, gardener and wine maker.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 from 5 – 7 pm at Weatherford Mortuary. Family and friends will meet on Wednesday, November 6th at Oak Ridge Memorial Park for a graveside service. An online guest book can be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com.
