Obituary for James Curry Franklin

James Curry Franklin, 85, of Oak Ridge, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019 at his home.
He was born November 11, 1933 in St. Charles, KY, the son of Herschel Lee Franklin and Sarah Eunice Suttle Franklin. He served with the US Army from 1955 to 1957 where he attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Dr. Franklin retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems where he was a chemist at the Y-12 Plant. He was a member of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church. He was avid learner and educator and taught at Pellissippi State Community College. He enjoyed taking classes himself on many diverse subjects. He enjoyed reading, and cooking and especially loved to fish. He loved his family and was a devoted friend. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by infant son, James Curry Franklin Jr; toddler brother, Herschel Lee Franklin Jr., and sisters, Lois Royal and Rose Duncan. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Jean Gosa Franklin. They would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on October 7th of this year. He is also survived by daughter, Margie McDannald and husband Jim of Gallatin, TN; sisters, Mollie Trunell of Gilbertsville, KY and Cheryl Mintz and husband Graham of Princeton, KY; brother-in-law, Jim Duncan of Owensboro, KY; grandchildren, Lyndsay Franklin Crews and husband Scott of Mooresville, NC, Jamie McDannald Sachette and husband Guy of Columbia, KY and David McDannald and wife Dawn of Gallatin, TN; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Katie, Tatum and Nathan Crews, Bradley McDannald and wife Shanna, Mitchell McDannald and wife Whitney and Britnie McDannald and 3 great-great grandchildren, Theia, Wynter, Owen; and many loved nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 from 10 – 11am at Kern Memorial United Methodist Church. The service will follow at 11am with Dr. Don Morris and Rev. Dan Taylor officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Tennessee National Guard. In keeping with his wishes, Dr. Franklin will be cremated. The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to the healthcare professionals that cared for Dr. Franklin, from UT Hospice and Home Care. They treated Dr. Franklin with expertise, kindness and a sincere concern for his well- being. Additionally, the members of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church have been a steadfast and loyal congregation with prayer and concerns; and to the faithful friends that walked this walk every step of the way – Thank You!
