Obituary for Herbert Clinton Wright

Herbert C. Wright of Oak Ridge, TN passed away of natural causes at the age 88 on July 3, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lorraine Virginia Wright and his four children Peter J. Wright, Jamie H. Wright, David C. Wright (Corinne) and Lorianne Wright and two grandchildren, Daniel G. Wright and Gwendolyn N. Wright. He is also survived by the beloved Rubin family, niece Lisa M. Rubin (Kevin Rubin) and special grand nephews, Eric, Nicholas and Tyler. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Pearl Wright, sister Dorothy June Dunn, niece Debra Hillard and daughter-in-law, Chris Wright..
Herb was born in Chicago, IL and later moved with his family to Craddock, VA. He was a Life Scout as a teenager, spent time running the movie projector at the local theatre, collecting recyclables during World War II, squirrel and moss hunting, and later graduated from Craddock High School where he played center on the football team (nickname “Ironman”). After graduation he enlisted in the Air Force in 1948. He went on to serve 20 years and retired at a rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He was both a Korean Conflict and Vietnam War veteran and was MIA for a period of time during the Korean War. Some of his favorite stories included those during his military service in Formosa (currently Taiwan), which included teaching English classes at the U.S. Embassy. He was stationed at Otis Air Force Base where he was a radar technician on the EC121-H “Super Constellation” for nine years in the Staff Electronics Section of the 961st Airborne Early Warning & Control Squadron (AEW&Con), 551st Wing. It was during this assignment, he met his future wife Lorraine. After one year of dating, they married at Central Methodist Church in Brockton, MA in 1958.
He was awarded an Award of the Air Force Commendation for his efforts that enabled the 551st AEW&Con to develop the Airborne Long Range Input airborne early warning system concept. The guidance and deliberate decisions which he made in the performance of his duties benefitted and enhanced this mission. The citation for this award reads ”His deep sense of duty and espirit de corps reflect very creditably upon himself and the United States Air Force.” Without a doubt, he was deeply committed to his mission and would tell wonderful stories about this time in his career including the 551st AEW&Con mission during various crisis of the early 1960’s.
The family spent time at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington DC and Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. After 20 years and four children, Herb and Lorraine retired to Plantation, Florida. While in Florida, Herb served as a Manager of Logistics and Material Support for Systems Engineering, which later became the Gould Corporation. He stayed with the company for more than 30 years retiring in 2002.
Herb was active in scouting and served as a Scout Master for Troop 111 in Plantation, FL and chaperoning the Plantation High School marching band to football games. He had an appreciation for nature and enjoyed gardening and feeding and watching birds with Lorraine. He was a dog lover and had several Kerry Blue Terriers while in Florida. In his 70’s he took on painting and became a master woodcarver creating wood sculptures with his favorite subjects being bird and fish scenes.
Since arriving in Oak Ridge in 2006, he has been a faithful member of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church, served as President of the Men’s Club for a period of time, and was active member of the Monday Morning Maintenance team. He enjoyed the fellowship and activities of the team and their weekly endeavors were often the highlight of his week.
Herb will be greatly missed by family and friends for his intellect, creativity, and steadfastness. The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 21, 2019 from 1 - 2pm at Kern Memorial United Methodist Church. The Memorial Service will follow at 2pm with Rev. Donna Hester and Rev.
