Deszmer Pollock, 100, formerly of Oak Ridge, passed quietly amongst family on January 21, 2019.


Deszmer Pollock, age 100, wife of the late Bill Pollock (The Music Box), both formerly of Oak Ridge, passed away quietly amongst family on January 21, 2019 at the Tennova Medical Center in Knoxville.

Deszmer was born on April 25, 1918 in Kingsport, Tennessee. She graduated with a BSN from the University of Tennessee Nursing Program at Memphis in 1947 as part of the US Cadet Nursing Program of WWII. After receiving her Nursing Certificate at Kennedy Hospital in Memphis, she moved to Oak Ridge in 1948 and worked in the then newly established and experimental Oak Ridge Hospital Nuclear Medicine Research Center. Deszmer provided care for patients receiving “Atomic Cocktails” as a novel approach to thyroid and other cancers.

Deszmer was introduced to her future husband, Bill Pollock, by Oak Ridge’s Ruth Skidmore on a blind date in 1950. Deszmer and Bill were married on Dec 27, 1953 at Reedy Creek Presbyterian Church in Orebank, Kingsport. They were married for just shy of 50 years when Bill passed away in 2003.

Deszmer worked in private practice as a Registered Nurse for Dr. T Guy Fortney until the birth of her son, Jim Pollock in 1955. She returned to practice nursing care in 1973 at Westmall Nursing Home in Oak Ridge until retiring in her 70’s.

Her husband, Bill Pollock was the owner of the Music Box in Jackson Square Oak Ridge where she spent many late nights helping Bill with the accounting.

On April 25, 2018, Deszmer celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family at her daughter, Susie Stout’s house where she lived since 2009.

Deszmer was preceded in death by husband William John (Bill) Pollock Jr, her mother, Lula Esther Parris Crane, her father Ralph Washington Crane Sr, her sister Yvonne George and brothers Kermit, Ralph, Vernon and Edward Crane.

She is survived by her daughter, Anna Deszmer (Susie) Stout (husband Lamarr) of Knoxville, son Jim Pollock (wife Laura Lichter) of Boulder Colorado, her sister Joanne Underwood, granddaughters, Melissa (Annie) and Sarah Jordan Stout and a cadré of nieces, nephews with generations of offspring.

Receiving of friends and family will be 1:00-2:30pm Saturday Jan 26 at Weatherford Mortuary, 158 South Jefferson Circle in Oak Ridge. Followed by a graveside service at 3:00pm at the Oak Ridge Memorial Park, 1501 Bethel Valley Road in Oak Ridge.
