Obituary for Walter Ben Bailey

Walter Ben Bailey, age 85 of Oak Ridge, was called home by our Lord and Savior on Monday, January 18th, 2018. Ben moved to Oak Ridge from Pennington Gap, Virginia as a junior in high school in 1948. He attended Highland View Baptist Church, which later became Central Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his Mother Esther Marsee Bailey, Father Elbert Louis Bailey, Brother Robert Bailey, Brother Arthur Bailey, and Sister Mary Bailey Lee. He is survived by his Wife and Best Friend June Mobley Bailey, Son Michael Bailey, Daughter Lea Bailey Foxworth and her Husband Mark Foxworth; grandchildren whom he loved dearly Michael Foxworth, Matthew Foxworth, Julie Bailey, and Jodie Bailey; Sisters, Edna Bailey Miller (Roland Miller He deceased) of Murfreesboro and Bettye Bailey Ridgeway (Brice Ridgeway) of Roanoke, Virginia; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ben dearly loved the game of baseball. He played in recreation and industrial leagues in Oak Ridge from the summer of 1948 until he was drafted into the US ARMY during the Korean Conflict in March of 1953. He went on to play baseball in the army at Fort Stewart, GA in 1954. His biggest thrill was pitching against Fort Jackson, who started 7 major league players, where he held them scoreless for five innings. Ben started coaching recreation teams in Oak Ridge in 1955 and coached for about 50 years. He also coached Oak Ridge High School pitchers for 15 years. He was blessed to be able to coach all four grandchildren as well. Coaching his kids and grandkids was very special to him throughout his lifetime. Ben felt honored to be nominated and become a member of the Oak Ridge Hall of Fame in 1994. He was a board member and Vice President of the Hall of Fame from 1996 until 2014. Ben also coached recreation basketball, both boys and girls, for about 20 years. Ben worked at both K-25 and Y-12 for 42 years and retired as a staff engineer in 1994. Ben’s family would like to express deepest gratitude for the nursing and CNA staff and Dr. Jeffery Summers at Tennova’s Select Specialty Hospital in Powell, Tennessee. The Family will receive friends Saturday, June 23rd from 1 – 2 PM at Weatherford Mortuary, followed immediately by graveside service at Oak Ridge Memorial Park at 2:30 PM, with Reverend Tom Job officiating.
