Obituary for Robert George Keil

Robert George Keil, 86, passed away on June 30, 2018. Bob was born on May 9, 1932 in Quincy, Illinois. He married his high school sweetheart Harriett Jean Austin in August 1952. While in Illinois, he served in the National Guard, which was activated into the U. S. Army. He was deployed to Korea for the remainder of the Korean War. After discharge in 1953, he continued to serve in the Army Reserves until he retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 1991.
In 1959, Bob moved his family to Oak Ridge where he was employed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the Fabrication Department as a machinist. He served as Shop Steward, Chief Steward, and Vice President of Local 480 International Association of Machinists. Also, he was Job Bid Officer, Recording Secretary, and Vice President of the Atomic Trades and Labor Council before serving as President of the ATLC for 14 years. He retired in 1993 after 35 years of company service.
Bob was active in many community activities including United Way, Red Cross, Leadership Oak Ridge, Leadership Knoxville, Big Brothers and Sisters, Roane State Community College, Oak Ridge Community Foundation, and Anderson County Schools. He was instrumental in establishing the present High Places Community Church in Oak Ridge. For the last ten years, he attended West Park Baptist Church in Knoxville where he worked tirelessly as a volunteer in the furniture ministry and food pantry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Dorothy Keil, and three brothers Marvin, Daniel, and David Keil. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jean Keil; by his son, Ted Keil of Murfreesboro; by daughters Susan Gann, Lori (Jack) Frye, and Sandi (Mike) Thaler, all of Oak Ridge; and by grandchildren Steve Gann (Tammy) and daughters Hayley, Taylor, and Rylee; Nick Orlando (Laura) and son Ferris; Elizabeth Orlando and son Daniel Seals; Rachel Frye, and Vanessa Frye.
Receiving of friends will be a held at Weatherford Mortuary, Oak Ridge, TN on Friday, July 6th from 5:00-7:00 pm with a funeral service immediately following at 7:00 pm. A family burial will be held at Quincy Memorial Park on Monday, July 9th at 11:00 am in Quincy, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to West Park Baptist Church, 8833 Middlebrook Pike, Knoxville, TN 37932 or High Places Community Church, 123 Randolph Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
