Obituary for Raymond Bruce Bogardus

Raymond Bruce Bogardus, an environmental consultant and Oak Ridge native, died Saturday February 3rd, 2018, after a brief battle with kidney and heart failure. He was 71.

Ray was born in Oak Ridge in May 1946, and he graduated in 1964 from Oak Ridge High School, where he ran track and played trumpet in the marching band. He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he earned a B.S. in Zoology and studied aquatic ecology at the graduate level.

He began his career at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1970, moving on to work as a field researcher, project manager, senior executive, and principal consultant for a wide array of companies including Wapora, Ecological Analysts, Roy F. Weston, Ogden Environmental and Engineering, and CH2MHill. His work in freshwater and marine ecology took him to 49 states and more than a dozen foreign countries, including Venezuela, South Korea, France, and most recently, the United Arab Emirates.

Ray published numerous professional and scholarly papers on marine ecology, and he also wrote several books, including “How to Win Any Interview” and "Hannah the Magic Shelter Dog," a children’s story.

A lifelong avid Oak Ridge Wildcats and Tennessee Vols fan, Ray was a skilled golfer, fisherman, and outdoorsman who enjoyed spending his free time plying the streams, rivers, and lakes of Tennessee, Maryland, and New York with his fly rod in search of bass, crappie, and trout.

He is survived by his mother, Muriel Bogardus of Oak Ridge, his son Tim Bogardus of Tahoe City, CA, his third wife, Karin (Wolfson) Bogardus of Lawrenceburg, TN, and by his sisters Amy Smith of Knoxville and Sarah Waddell of Oak Ridge. His second son, Shawn Allen Bogardus of Gaithersburg, MD, preceded him in death in 2004. His father, Bruce J. Bogardus, died in Oak Ridge in 1989.
