Obituary for Norman Dale Walker

Norman Dale Walker, age 83 years old, died Friday October 13, 2017 in Knoxville, Tennessee surrounded by his family. He was born March 29, 1934 in Clifford, Kentucky to Louella (Peters) and William Clyde Walker. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Norma J. Walker (Boesel) of Oak Ridge, Tn; sons William (Tracy) and Robert (Michelle), grandchildren Rebecca, Sarah, Kimberly, Jessica, Mark; five great grandchildren; his sister Jewell Roselle; as well many cousins, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by both parents; brothers Bennie, Millard, and Jarrett; and a sister June Riggs.
Norman was a graduate of Lawrence County High School (Kentucky) and received an associates degree from Oklahoma State University. Norman joined the U. S. Navy in 1953 as a Hospital Corpsman and proudly served his country as a veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Era. His military career included a duty assignment with the Fleet Marine Force, 3rd Marine Division in the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan; sea duty service aboard the USS Yorktown, USS Freemont, USS John F. Kennedy; and stateside duty assignments at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital (Philadelphia, Pa), and the Naval and Marine Reserve Centers in Pueblo, Colorado and Stillwater, Oklahoma. He retired from the Navy in 1974 at the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer while serving as the Senior Enlisted Advisor at the Naval Regional Medical Center, Great Lakes, Illinois.
Norman was a Kentucky Colonel, a Noble of the Mystic Shrine of the El Hasa Temple (Ashland, Kentucky), a Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky Free and Accepted Masons, a past member of Toastmasters International; and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Fleet Reserve Association, and The Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses. Norman held a lifetime membership with the American Legion; serving as Post Commander (twice) of Post 321 (Cooper City, Florida), elected as State (Florida) Vice Commander, appointed Department (Florida) Membership Chairman (1992-1993), and held various leadership roles at the South Carolina American Legion Post 71; and served as a local District (South Carolina) Commander.
In retirement, Norman enjoyed working as an instructor at the Huntington College of Business (West Virginia), and later as a NJROTC instructor at the North Augusta High School (South Carolina). Norman enjoyed reading, was an avid writer, and enjoyed a life-long passion for horse racing.
A memorial service for Norman will be held at 2:00 pm on November 4, 2017, at the American Legion Post 71 in North Augusta, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, his family has requested that donations be made in his name to American Legion Post 71, PO Box 6036, North Augusta, SC 29861.
