Obituary for Marsha Murphy Howard

Musician, Oak Ridge High School Graduate

Marsha Jean (Murphy) Howard born September 11, 1933, died peacefully at home on April 17, 2018.
Marsha was born in Cherryvale, Kansas, the oldest child of Mike and Wilma Murphy. After moving to Oklahoma, the family settled in Oak Ridge in 1949. Marsha graduated from Oak Ridge High School, and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education in 1955 where she was a Torchbearer for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and served as PanHellenic President. She excelled in piano performance and later chose to use this God-given talent in her churches.
After graduation she moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where she taught music in secondary education and met her future husband of fifty-eight years , Dr.Robert G. Howard.
The Howards lived in Louisville, Kentucky for a number of years, where they had three children.
The family relocated to Oak Ridge in 1976 and joined First United Methodist Church where Marsha shared her musical talent for several decades with the church and community. Following her mother and sister-in-law, Marsha joined the PEO sisterhood and served as local and state president.
Marsha is survived by three children, Robert, Mark and his wife Laura, Susan, and five grandchildren: Luke, Sam, Kaia, Mark James, and Taylor, as well as a large extended family, including her brother and sister-in-law, John and Mary Lou Murphy of Oak Ridge.
On her behalf, the family would like to thank her caregivers and hospice.
Psalms 98:4-5 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing.
Services will be held at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 12th at 11:00am in the sanctuary. An on-line guest book may be signed at weatherfordmortuary.com.
