Retired Teacher from Linden Elementary School
Jean Lott Smith, 86, passed away on September 15, 2017. She was born April 25, 1931 in McNairy County, Tennessee and reared in Morris Chapel, Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late Euna Smith Lott and Marvin Robbins Lott. She was pre-deceased by her brother Carroll Robbins Lott in 1977.
Jean received her B. S. Degree in Home Economics in 1951 and her M. S. Degree in Elementary Education in 1977, both from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She graduated from the Morris Chapel High School, attended University of Tennessee, Martin, and then transferred to UT Knoxville. Jean met her husband Ben in May 1950 while attending UT. They were married in December 1951. Jean was an avid Lady VOLS Basketball fan.
Jean was one of the founders of the nursery school at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge in 1964. She served as the first Director-Teacher of the program and then joined the staff at Oak Ridge Nursery School. In 1971, she began her career with Oak Ridge City Schools, teaching at Woodland, Highland View, and Linden Elementary Schools before retiring in 1993.
She was a 50 year member at First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge before transferring her membership to Grace Covenant, and then to First United Methodist Church. Over the years she served as a volunteer for several church related groups and activities. She and her husband Ben loved entertaining extensively in their home for friends and family. She enjoyed the planning, preparation and presentation of food, and especially liked to incorporate her knowledge of food and nutrition as it related to her diabetes--she was a 58 year diabetic. During retirement, Jean and Ben traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. They especially liked to cruise.
Jean is survived by her husband, Ben B. Smith; a son Gary Robbins Smith and his wife Debbie Utz, both from Orlando, Florida; a son Larry Charles Smith and his wife Jennifer, both from Evans, Georgia; a daughter Laura Jean Smith Young and her husband Don, both from Leesburg, Virginia; six grandsons—Craig Smith from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Jordan Smith from Augusta, Georgia; Kevin Young (and wife Amanda) from Jacksonville, Florida; Steven Young from Leesburg, Virginia; and Ryan and Benjamin Smith from Evans, Georgia.
Celebration of Life will be held at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge on Friday, September 22. Receiving of Friends will be held from 11:00am-1:00pm followed by a service at 1:00 with Rev. Mark Flynn and Dr. Larry Dipboye officiating. A private family graveside service will take place at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association or to Aldergate Sunday School class at First United Methodist Church, Oak Ridge. Condolences may be offered at
