Obituary for James "Jim" Shaffer

James (Jim) Shaffer left this world peacefully on March 14, 2018 at the age of 89. Preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mary Nell (Lennelle) Shaffer, his parents, William and Lenore Shaffer, and brother, Paul Shaffer. Jim’s early years were spent in El Paso, TX. Later, his family moved to Big Spring, TX, where he met his future wife as high schoolers. They later married and had four children, eleven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren: David (Vicky) Shaffer, Kentucky; Brenda (Andy) Black, Knoxville; Martin (Kathleen) Shaffer, South Carolina; and James (Angela) Shaffer, Spring City. Grandchildren: Avennelle Shaffer, David Shaffer, Logan Black, Luke Black, Kendal (Penn) Bowers, Laurel (Jose) Garcia, Jason Shaffer, Hannah Shaffer, John Shaffer, Garrett Shaffer, and Carolyn Shaffer. Great-Grandchildren: Spencer Branham, John Branham, Lela Shaffer, Cainan Burchfield, and Elle Gray Bowers. Jim was also survived by his sister, Billie Frances Carr, Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army as part of the post WWII occupational forces in Europe. After earning his Master of Science in Chemistry at Texas A&M, he moved his family via Ponca City, OK to Oak Ridge, TN. He joined the Molten Salt Reactor Division as a physical chemist where he worked with production and research teams at Y-12 and X-10 for 17 of his 34-year career. Near the end of his life, he was gratified by the renewed business and scientific interest in the Molten Salt Project research and technologies that were proven to produce safe nuclear energy. Jim was an accomplished furniture maker and woodworker and sold specialty lumber from his business on Warehouse Road. After retirement and a move to Fairfield Glade, TN from Oak Ridge, he and Mary Nell enjoyed travels in their RV. They were very fortunate to have wonderful neighbors and churches in both communities. The family is grateful for the friendship and care provided to Jim following the death of Mary Nell three years ago. Sandy David and other professionals with Home Instead were exceptional caregivers. Graveside services will be held on Sunday March 25, 2018 at 2PM EST at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the assistance of Weatherford Mortuary.
