James (Jim) F. Smith, age 78, died peacefully May 4, 2018 surrounded by family members, after a lengthy illness.

Known as "Smitty" by family and friends, Jim lived a very full and rich life, with service to God, his family and a long work career. He and his wife Sue, are members of St. Mary's church in Oak Ridge, TN.

He was born in Arnold, PA. to parents Frances B. Smith and Robert R. Smith.

Jim was a veteran of the US Air Force where he worked on aircraft navigational repair. He then attended Christian Brothers College in Memphis, TN where he earned his BS degree in Electrical Engineering. He then worked for Westinghouse from 1968 to 2004 in several locations and capacities, namely nuclear engineering. He was awarded 2 separate patents for designs on nuclear submarines. In 2004, he returned to Oak Ridge, where he was a Project Manager at Y-12 National Security Site for another 10 years.

Jim loved hunting, playing poker with his Texas Hold-em Group, going to the beach, spending time with his family and friends and eating doughnuts!

He and wife Sue "soulmate and the love of his life" , were married for almost 57 years. They have 2 children, son, James Eric Smith, of Clinton, daughter Ginger and her husband Paul Smith of Knoxville and granddaughter Christine (Chrissy) Thomas. He was also blessed with 2 step grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren. Jim is survived by a sister, Linda Hahn of PA., a niece and numerous cousins and special friends.

The family would like to give special thanks to UT Hospice especially, Trenton Harrel, Dr. Foust and staff of Tennessee Cancer Center as well as Dr. Jeffrey Gilbert and Stephanie at Gastroenterology Associates.

There will be a mass for Jim at St. Mary's Chapel (in the back of the main church) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on Saturday, May 12th at 1:00 pm. There is a columbarium on the grounds where there will be an inurnment immediately following the mass. Following that will be a reception at the church. An online guest book can be signed at Weatherford Mortuary site. In lieu of flowers or plants we ask that you make a donation to UT Hospice or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

The family would find comfort and warmth if all that knew Jim and loved him like we do, would attend the mass and fellowship at the reception with us.
