THE LIFE OF
HELEN O’DELL KIRKLAND LAND

“We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”. Corinthians 5:8

Helen K. Land was one of eight children. She was born to the late James and Letha Kirkland of Columbiana, AL on June 1, 1920. She completed the 9th grade in Columbiana, Al in the Shelby County school system. Being determined to receive her certificate equivalent to a High School Diploma, she completed her G.E.D. in Oak Ridge, TN in the 1960‘s. Helen joined Nathanial Land in Holy Matrimony in 1970, and they shared 17 years together until his home going in 1987.

Helen learned to love the Lord at an early age. Having had prayer meetings with her parents at home, they explained to her how the Lord died for her sins and that serving the Lord assured her of eternal life with Him. “Mother Land” (as she was known at Mt. Zion Baptist Church and in the community) sang in the choir and taught Sunday School for many years. She was President of the Junior Choir, a member of the “Mother ‘s On Board” and helped to organize the CC Fuller Circle organization which was responsible for the beautification of the church. In fact, it was under her leadership that the stain glass windows and murals were installed over the Baptismal Pool. She was always willing to serve those in the community who were in need whenever she was able.

Mother Land was a very active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for many years until her home going on January 28, 2018. She was highly thought of, and will be truly missed.

Preceding her in transition to be with the Lord were; her beloved son, William Aaron Payton (aka) “Billy”, one sister , and four brothers. Left to cherish her memory is one sister, Mary Bowden, six Grandchildren: Min. William A. Payton Jr., Min. Antonio S. Payton, Pastor/Dr. Gwendolyn F. Matthews, Mrs. Theodosia O. Heard, Min. Lisa D. Payton and Mr. Jonathan E. Payton. All born and raised in San Diego, CA. She also leaves Sixteen Great Grandchildren, a host of loving Nieces and Nephews, her good friends (Mr. & Mrs. George Reid), Deacon John Thompson, Mr. Scott Carson and Wendy Carson (Munchkin) whom she raised from birth.

Helen K. Land, was a Daughter, Mother, Sister, Auntie and above all, a blessing to us all. She will be truly missed, but forever loved.

She leaves us with her favorite scripture:

Psalms 23

“THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD; I SHALL NOT WANT.

HE MAKETH ME TO LIE DOWN IN GREEN PASTURES: HE LEADETH ME BESIDE THE STILL WATERS.
HE RESTORETH MY SOUL; HE LEADETH ME IN THE PATHS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS FOR HIS NAMES SAKE.
YEA, THOUGH I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH, I WILL FEAR NO EVIL: FOR THOU ART WITH ME; THY ROD AND THY STAFF, THEY COMFORT ME.
THOU PREPARETH A TABLE BFORE ME IN THE PRESENCE OF MINE ENEMIES; THOU ANOINTEST MY HEAD WITH OIL; MY CUP RUNNETH OVER.SURELY GOODNESS AND MERCY WILL FOLLOW ME ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE; AND I WILL DWELL IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD FOREVER.”
