Obituary for Charles William "Bill" Wilson, III

Charles William Wilson III (Bill), died on November 29, 2017, at the home he shared with his wife, Barbara, for over 50 years. But it would be a disservice to him to focus on his death, and instead, we want to share some of the amazing impact he had on this world throughout his life. Bill was a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a Papa, a scientist, a genealogical researcher, a world traveler, a church elder, a volunteer and a faithful man who could not only speak the words of Christ, but made sure he lived them out in his daily life.
Bill earned both his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Vanderbilt University, where his father was a professor and where he met his wife, Barbara. He said about his wife, "I met and fell in love with the light of my life and my anchor." They married on June 2, 1960, and moved to Oak Ridge where he worked for the Y-12 plant for 34 years. During his career, Bill received an Award of Excellence from Y-12 for his work in developing the Wilson-Fowler curve fitting spline. He also received an Award of Excellence for epitomizing the Value of Concern for People with his assistance in helping a special needs employee.
Bill did not help people for awards and recognition. He helped people and served because he was blessed with a true servant's heart full of the love of Christ. He was a member and Elder Emeritus of First Christian Church of Oak Ridge where he served in numerous roles, including singing in the church choir for over 50 years. He served on the Christian Church in Tennessee Regional Board, the Disciples of Christ Historical Society of Tennessee, and was awarded the Disciple Merit Award in 2016. Bill also volunteered for many years at the Ecumenical Storehouse of Oak Ridge and served at its Treasurer for the last 7 years.
In addition to his career with Y-12 and his service to the church and community, Bill found his "second career" in genealogy, which he began doing in his retirement. He loved to research his family's history and traced back over 2000 relatives and over 800 direct ancestors dating back to 956AD. In 2010, Bill co-authored a book with his brother, John, titled Regiment of the Tattered Flag: History of the Seventh Kentucky Mounted Infantry, which is a biography about some of their ancestors who fought in the Civil War.
Throughout his life Bill travelled the world, saw all 50 states and stood on all seven continents. He travelled with his wife and children to historical sites and National Parks in the United States. After his retirement, Bill and Barbara travelled the world through the Elderhostel program. Bill was a man of the world, a man of people, and a man of God. We will miss him dearly.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Bethany Hills Project (http://tndisciples.org/projectbethanyhills) or the Ecumenical Storehouse of Oak Ridge (http://www.ecumstore.org).
