Obituary for Charles Wilbur Collins

Charles W. Collins died on February 4, 2018 at 3:30 am at Greenfield Senior Living of Oak Ridge. He was born on October 7, 1922 in Sandersville, Mississippi, the eldest of three sons of William Arthur and Emma Fall Collins. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Weirton, West Virginia where he grew up. His university education was interrupted by military service with the 91ST Bomb Group of the 8TH Air Force completing 35 missions in a B-17 Bomber serving as a Flight Engineer and receiving six Air Medals. He completed his education with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from West Virginia University in 1948. Shortly after graduation he married Dolly Nesselrodt.
The family moved to Oak Ridge in 1952 where he was employed as a Project Engineer at the K-25 Plant before transferring to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to participate in the mechanical design of the High Flux Isotope Reactor, several other experimental reactors, and many test reactors to investigate the safety of several reactor power systems. For ten years he worked with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers to establish national health and safety standards for nuclear power systems.
Mr. Collins was member of the United Church (Chapel on the Hill) where he served as treasurer for six years and enjoyed working with the “Helping Hands” group which assisted with providing “Aid to Distressed Families in Anderson County”.
After retiring from ORNL in 1985, Mr. Collins enjoyed part time consulting work, ham radio operating, personal computing, reading and traveling to attend theater and symphonic music performances, as well as visiting museums and the many parks of the U. S. National Park Service.
Mr. Collins was preceded in death by his wife Dolly in 2015. Survivors include their three children: Dr. Charles D. Collins of Las Cruces, New Mexico; James S. Collins of New York, New York; and Lisa Collins Werner of Knoxville, Tennessee; and a brother Dr. William L. Collins of Sequim, Washington. Another brother Dr. Harold A. Collins preceded him in death in 1986. There are five grandchildren: Patrick, Candace, Ryan and Jada Collins, as well as Kristen Nicole Werner. There are eight great grandchildren: Skyler, Jett, Knox, Alexis and Kegan Collins, Sevin Gunter, Sierra and Candace Rees.
The family will receive friends at 12:30 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on 2/10/18. A service will follow at 1:30 p.m. The interment will be at 2:30 PM at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
